Thanks to the efforts of Herbert Xu (and others), FreeS/WAN works with the 
putative 2.6 kernel code. He releases updates rather often.

Testing is good; there are still issues, both with the patch and with the 
kernel code itself. Check the Design archives for details on that.

No, it's not. This may be for the best, as most people accept that KLIPS isn't 
all that pretty to look at. freeswan.org still has a KLIPS code rewrite in 
the works, and KLIPS development will not totally cease. If said development 
continues actively, it will aim to provide alternative kernel code that 
allows for additional FreeS/WAN functionality if used.

Yes; I know that Michael Richardson's current plan is to merge the patch 
against 2.6 into our next release, such that our userland code will work 
regardless of which ipsec stack sits in the kernel. Ken Bantoft plans on 
doing something similar with SuperFreeS/WAN, AFAIK.
