How do you normally login with this basic security switched on? (because i
wouldn't know, perhaps I'm missing something).

I'd say: This 'bug' ought to fixed. Admin-pages and editors simply should
have smart enough login-pages, to allow for basic security logins. This
should not be very difficult, but someone has to do it...
