I knew I was not alone! I think there is enough momentum to go forward with the fix I was proposing. Heath is already working on one solution and hopefully my solution will address some of the other scenarios. Users will be able to pick which approach works best for them. I will start a new thread shortly (as Heath has done with his <x:script> approach) and will ask you guys for some specific feedback.
