Please submit a JIRA issue on this if you have not done so already. 
I'm not really familiar with JSCookMenu so I'll let someone more
experienced tackle the fix.  In the meantime, you can always build
your own jar file from the source code and tweak as you are
suggesting.  If time is of the essence then I would recommend you do
this and keep on the developers to make sure the bug gets resolved
before the next release.
