I think, companies like TrollTech have the ultimate solution to the problem, opensource the lib, but if you want to earn money, put it under a you can buy yourself out GPL, that way you have covered most problems. I would never go for a plain closed source lib, there are
too many problems involved with not being able to look into the source
and alter it, I have been there years ago, and can remember that occasionally the usage of the library was closer to a reverse engineering process to figure out what side constraints caused a last minute problem.
