Actually I switched from h:dataTable to x:dataTable for the sole purpose of setting preserveDataModel=true when using dataScroller, so preserveDataModel is more of the cause than the solution to my problem. It's of no use to preserve the data model if the data model can't be constructed in the first place :) -Mike
