It seems quite likely to me that some sort of solution to this is
likely to happen in JSF 2.0 -- and Shale's experience with dialogs
will certainly be an input to the decision of how to implement the JSF
part of things (hint hint: so try them out please, so you can help
provide feedback :-).  But, as with all JCP standards, it really ends
up being up to the expert group on the details of exactly how a
particular concept will get implemented.

As for the rest of the web tier stack, I lobby my friends in the
platform area for lots of thngs ... who knows what might show up later
there.  But I've specifically gotten interest from Ed and Roger (the
JSF spec leads) on proposing that we deal with dialogs (and the
related state saving and cleanup mechanisms) in a JSF 2.0 time frame.
