Well, I would begin with a brand new component (that extends the inputText), because, IMO the rendering behaviour you are trying to achieve is too different to the current inputText (renders a table, etc...). Once was that one, it would be possible to evaluate if a merge with the tomahawk inputText is appropiate or not...
