I agree with it being part of the model, however I feel (and I've seen it in other posts) that the tree should throw NodeExpansionEvents when the navigation controls are clicked. This way I could implement my lazy loading in my listener for those events.  It would save developers the hassle of using there own navigation images to accomplish this task.

IMHO, the lazy loading mechanism is not responsibility of the tree2 itself, but of the treemodel that provides the data to the tree2, so you can provide your own implementation using, for example, Hibernate or OJB.
