We are using the WebGalileo components, and I believe their latest version of the Tree component uses AJAX technology. I'm not familiar with the details, but it works well for us and has lots of flexibility (supports either client-side JavaScript or "lazy-loading" server-side interactions).
It is not open-source, but the licensing terms and pricing are reasonable.
