Hi Andy, There were several people, including yourself, asking about this topic over the last few days, so I wrote up a short article on it.
http://wiki.apache.org/myfaces/How_The_Immediate_Attribute_Works Note that you can include renderResponse() in your valueChangedListener newPartnerDto.selectprimary() method so that non-immediate components aren't validated. However, this means that no other actions on non-immediate components (valueChangeListener/actionListener/action) will be executed either. Hopefully the article will explain everything.
