Anyway to bind a tree.HtmlTree (NOT tree2) to backing bean?

I’m trying to use MyFaces 1.1.1 TreeTable.    Is there any way to bind an instance of org.apache.myfaces.custom.tree.HtmlTree to my backing bean?  The <t:tree> tag does not have a binding attribute?     In addition to the binding problem, the HtmlTree code is throwing a NullPointerException in HtmlTree.addToModelListeners() whenever I try to leave the page showing the tree or expand a node of the tree.   Also, I’d like more control over what nodes are expanded initially and I believe the best way to do that is to bind the tree to an instance of HtmlTree in my backing bean.   Any help would be greatly appreciated.   Thanks,        Ken Gertsen
