Do you know the
general advantages of server-side tab-switching?
I already tried it
by setting the related attribute of panelTabbedPane to "true", but didn't
get the behaviour I expected. I thought, only the active tab source code is
rendered, but as I could see in the HTML source, the content of all tabs is
rendered to the response, and the inactive tabs contents hidden only ... Is
this the behaviour intended, or did I miss some additional
configurations?

If you use the server side driven panelTabbedPane you can use the TabChangeListener.
This should solve your problem.
