The most preferred documentation format would be an xdocs file (for a good example, see the validateCompareTo component in the sandbox). "mvn site" to build the xdocs into a static html target.
But, really, anything you want to put into the wiki would be better than nothing and could eventually be migrated to an xdocs file.
