What do you mean by 'remove the mode'? I think just hard coding the 
attribute mode="day" in your JSP should do the trick.

The use case I have is to have a view that I always want it to stay in
the "day" mode. Basically, I want to have a button to show a user what
the schedule is for a given day and not all days.
