I hope that Sun at least has some valid reasons to enforce this behaviour :-)

I see your point. Most app servers do that (Weblogic, JBoss), but IIRC they stopped supporting the non-compliant behaviour by default between versions 7.0 and 8.1 of Weblogic precisely to avoid losing the J2EE cert. I agree you are right.
