I've had success with the binding/UIData approach as well. it even
works if the backing bean is request-scoped, because it won't matter if
your ListModel instance variable hasn't been initialized yet.
I've done it with <t:dataList> as well but I imagine it would work
equally well with a nested <h:dataModel>.
