I think that maybe the trinidad table has colspan support (not sure
though, I haven't tried it yet)

i cannot believe that there is now way to define a layout with <column>
and <f:facet name="header"> tags
like:
<t:datatable ...>
    <h:column>
        <f:facet name="header"></f:facet>
    </h:column>
     ...
    ....
</t:datatable>
