Hi, yes, this can happen if there is a server-side error occured during the ajax-request/response cycle.

Instead of getting the expected xml response when I submit inputAjaxText, I get the page's rendered html! I know this because I'm using FireBug to watch the return. The setter method on the backing bean is never called and the loading wheel never stops spinning. I can keep pressing the button and keep sending my requests, but always with the same result.
