The most part of problems related with AJAX stuff is
related with ServletResponse/Request beyond the URL portal thing that you
mentioned.

Not, that's about accurate. You can use DWR to
provide a "back door" to your Controller or backing bean. You can then do
the DHTML stuff in the browser to update the content locally. Using this
approach you end up using JSF as a server side View technology, while DWR and
DHTML give you a client side View. It's not ideal of course, but one way that
things can work.
What it really means is you have to think long and hard
about when you want to "refresh" (i.e. do a GET) your
portlet.
