Yes, it does sounds like a bug.   At minimum, the need for an id
should be documented.  But more likely, it should use the
auto-generated id if no id is specified.

You should open a JIRA issue on this.   You might even be able to
track down the problem and fix it fairly easily since it's a matter of
getting the id into the javascript even if it's not manually
specified.
