I've got another solution under the belt using DynaFaces which doesn't require any customization of the navigation components. Unfortunately, DynaFaces defect #13 (https://jsf-extensions.dev.java.net/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=13) has to be fixed before it is readily usable.

DynaFaces seems to be a very clean and efficient implementation of AJAX for JSF.
