Preferred way to include a response from another resource in the response

I would like to include content available at a certain URL in my 
response. I am serving XHTML files, and at a certain location in one of 
my files I would like to output some XHTML content which I can receive 
by invoking another resource. Is there a preferred way to do so?

I was thinking of manually requesting the external content and have a 
component output it, but I was thinking whether there was a known best 
practice for doing this.
