We use a filter which examines the request and creates a bean detailing the client's capabilities and other info which is then pushed into the session. Hidden JS-driven form fields in the form capture any aspect we wish to track while the rest of the info comes from the headers. Our backing beans are all "capability-aware" as their base class gets the capability bean from the session using the FacesContext.
