No, there is a very nice solution in tomahawk to solve exactly this usecase.
Have a look at t:updateActionListener.
Usage:
iterate over persons, for each person do
...
<h:commandButton value="xyz" action="#{bean.deletePerson}">
<t:updateActionListener
property="#{bean.id}" value="#{person.id}"/>
</h:commandButton>
The listener sets the id of person to the attribute of the bean. It
can then easily retrieved in the action/actionListener method.

I do not have a command link but a command button. I do not want to use a
