Interesting,
Examples both work fine with server and client now so your problem might be
something else.
Have you tried with a newer myfaces core? Maybe it's jboss?

What is your state saving method, recently a bug that was stopping
inputsuggestajax working with client side state saving is fixed.
Also you may try to upgrade your versions of core-tomahawk-sandbox.
