I'm pretty sure that MyFaces 1.1 (JSF 1.1) is required by the spec to support both Java 1.3 and Servlet 2.3. Open a JIRA issue if you find a specific issue where this is not true.
MyFaces 1.2 (JSF 1.2) requires Java 1.5 and servlet 2.4.
