[Trinidad] how to trigger a tr:panelPopup from java

Hi, I would trigger a panelPopup as a consequence of some menu action, 
instead of text/link clicking.
But from component javadoc it appears that the only activation modes 
allowed are either trigger or text attributes.
Is ther any chance for alternatives ?
