I do... I think if I'm not mistaken the doc type for html5 is just <!DOCTYPE HTML>
Note you only asked about the doc type, not the actual tags... or JSF tag equivalents. I'm using 2.1.6 as well and 1.1.11 as well. jdk1.6 and tomcat7. I didn't have to do anything special, it just works.
