So, I removed the netbeans project dir from my existing project and tries to
import it as a new PHP project with existing sources, but the IDE complains
“Sources directory is already NetBeans project (maybe only in memory)” I se
there was an outstanding issue in Netbeans from wayback where any xml files in
the project that have the word “project” in them cause this to happen.

I’m upgrading NB from v10 to v11 and opening an existing PHP project. PHP is
activated. I would think the project would be usable as is

PHP isn't activated by default so needs to be activated before you can use it.

There are 3 ways to do this. The easiest is to follow Geertjan's suggestion but
you can also activate it in Plugins>Installed or in Options by opening the PHP
"tab"

Best regards,

John

In the New Project dialog, create a new PHP project to enable PHP features.

I think the integrated gradle support is trashing my existing PHP project’s
settings. I have a fairly complex project that is in PHP, but (due to corporate
standards) has gradle build files in it. When I open the project in NB11 all I
see is the gradle nature and no source in the project view. Also, there are no
PHP project settings in the project properties disalog anymore.
