Definitely a message or button here would be good, and needs to be LTS aware ... There is already a notification for new releases - "just" need to marry the things up. This isn't strictly true - it also covers general IDE patches. NetBeans has always behaved like this. But the rapid release schedule does seem to have made it more confusing.
