I guess the reason why the mentioned JpaTemplate works with Hibernate but not 
with OpenJPA is that when converting JPQL to SQL Hibernate inlines constants 
whereas OpenJPA uses parameters (question marks). Then the issue with padding 
comes - parameters need to be padded with spaces but constants do not.
