Mike, yes, that's the exception I'm seeing. And I do have @GeneratedValues - of type SEQUENCE though, but these also get mapped to a table, at least on Postgres. So I suppose that explains why your simpler approach works for you and not for me.
Anyway, problem solved, but it might be useful to add a note in the user manual...
