For the record, you can see my GoogleMercator layer in action here http://dev.openlayers.org/sandbox/tschaub/google/examples/google-mercator.html Not (yet) supported, documented, tested, etc. But it does work for displaying vector layers, TileCache layers, WMS, and others over Google tiles.
