Yes. SphericalMercator projected is the best way to do that going
forward (http://trac.openlayers.org/wiki/SphericalMercator has more
info), and you can use the 'reproject': true flag on a WMS layer that is
served in EPSG:4326 to do client-side stretching (which is not
reprojection, but kind of looks like it is).
