Hi Pierre. I have found text layers to be pretty slow past 100 points and have moved to using a raster later.
How many points are you using? With a raster layer for the pushpins, you would have to load the tiles while navigating the map. So I think that with their approach they save bandwidth, and they increase usability for the final user.
