You have to think the vector point elements as markers. You can already add style to them (size, color, offset(?)). The x, y coordinates are given by the feature geometry. I prefered to use a (static ?) catalog but your approach seems interesting too. This would allow user to get symbols which number he doesn't know in advance or created on-the-fly.
