I've changed mine so that they are transparent(except for the inner symbol and outer border) until the control is hovered over. i think it adds a bit of discreteness to the ui.

OpenLayers is great! Thanks to all of you that have been participating in the development. But... there is always things that can be better. We all know that the default icons used for the various controls, i.e. the navigation toolbar and editing toolbar, have seen their best days long ago. I know that it's pretty easy to replace them with your own icons, but how do you find, or make, icons that are good? They have to look nice and be intuitive so that the users understand what they are meant to be used for. Does anyone have suggestions of good icons to use for the various controls? I am specifically interested in - a better looking ZoomBox. - better looking Navigation, PanPanel and ZoomPanel. - an intuitive icon for the SelectFeature control. - an intuitive icon for zooming to the extent of a feature. I guess there is some sort of international standard that would be nice to follow for these tools? Does anyone know of a good site with icons like these? Or maybe we could all try and come up with some nice icons here?
