OK, boys and girls, seems like I found the problem after some more hours of
digging in the mud.
The problem was that I had the js-script inside a JSP-page, and the $ symbol
is interpreted as an expression, i.e. ${field}, which the compiler could not
resolve, resulting in the function returning nothing.
A note on the wiki about this might be good?
