What would make you think they don't fit into "vast diversity of software 
that we work with"?

Certainly no one's going to hold up a ruler at the door and say "You must be
*this* much related to WebGIS to get in" :)

I think George was probably just making an example that would be pertinent
to the users on *this* list -- which, being the OpenLayers list, would likely
be the web-related tech :)
