You may want to listen to "featureadded" or "featuresadded" events instead.

Got this from email, and used 

layer.events.on({
                                                         "featureadded": 
function(event) {
                                                         alert("in" + 
layer.features[layer.features.length-1].id);

                                                         }, scope: layer
                                                } ); 

Seems to do the trick
