We can definitely integrate with Travis and add the Travis badges to the
project README, and most other apache projects on github today already do that.
To your earlier point about git repo being a mirror of svn - its indeed true
and that's how Apache infrastructure is setup and its not unique to OpenNLP
alone.
Regarding using Slack - we recently added a slack channel for the project to be
able to work closely on Releases and the 1.7.0 release today was in very large
part made possible due to slack. But ASF still mandates that most project
discussions still happen on mailing lists since they are archived (unlike slack
- the free version of which doesn't archive histories). So we may have to keep
to slack for sometime.
