I don't know if this is related to your problem, but there is a long standing 
bug with some Lexmark and Dell (rebranded Lexmark) printers, due to an error in 
their Windows printer drivers. Microsoft list a fix at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918730.

Other reports have suggested as a workaround that printing a page to the 
Lexmark using Notepad or some other application may leave the printer 
accessible to OpenOfice.

I have not tried either of these fixes, but OpenOffice Forum reports suggest 
that the Microsoft fix works in many cases.
