I forgot to put on the end, that I checked the saved .pdf file and it
came out exactly the same as the .odt page, colours and everything,
including a web link. Didn't know about your suggested method. Hope this
is a bit clearer.

please check 'tools - options - openoffice writer - print'. 'page
background' should be checked and 'print text in black' unchecked.
these options apply to exporting as pdf as well as to printing on paper.
