I just had the same problem. I fixed it by doing the following things.

1) There was an update available for the Thesaurus extension. You can tell
if there is an update available because there will be a green arrow
pointing down near the top-right of the OO window. I downloaded and
installed the updated extension.

2) I went to Tools -> Options and expanded the Language Settings -> Writing
Aids entries on the left of the options window. On the right side of the
window is a box labeled "Available Language modules". I clicked the Edit
button next to that box. Under the entry for OpenOffice.org New Thesaurus,
I unchecked the box and then re-checked it.

When I closed out the windows, everything worked and the Thesaurus was
available to use.
