Cheryl,

The 1712 error is a time out error.  Most likely there was a failed shut down 
of a program.  You will need to force quit any running programs, besides the 
finder, and then reboot your computer.  You may lose changes made to documents 
that were not properly closed previously.

In the future make sure you properly close all documents and applications 
before closing your computer.
