I always use the task manager to shut Open Office down. This way, after I reboot, I can have all my files open using the recovery window which opens immediately after clicking on the pinned icon on my taskbar.

If you are using Windows, start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any "soffice" processes shown as running on TM's Processes tab.
