I always use the task manager to shut Open Office down.  This way, after I 
reboot, I can have all my files open using the recovery window which opens 
immediately after clicking on the pinned icon on my taskbar.

un/re install will possibly (probably) not work.  If you are using
Windows, start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any "soffice" processes
shown as running on TM's Processes tab.  Such processes can be left over if you
close (powerdown) your computer too quickly after using OO, or if you have had a
program or computer crash.
