OpenOffice, being a 32 bit application, requires a 32 bit Java.  This can be 
installed alongside the 64 bit Java your operating system probably uses.  You 
must manually download a 32 bit Java from www.java.com.  The 32 bit Java 
versions have i586 in their filename.  Once downloaded and installed on must 
select it in OpenOffice using /Tools /Options /OpenOffice /Java
