Dealing with balky read-only files is quite simple. Just open the file to view it, do "select all" (usually ctrl-A), copy it to the clipboard (ctrl-C), open a new file using whatever file extension/file type applies, do a paste (ctrl-V), then do "save as" with a new filename. Then you are free to edit the new file any way you want.
