Isn't this roughly the opposite of the real situation? Some office suites are indeed collections of separate programs. Microsoft may present its collection of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and so on as "Microsoft Office", but they are still separate programs. (If you don't believe me, try opening a spreadsheet document from within Word. It won't open in Excel.) But OpenOffice is an integrated package, and when you have it open, you can open documents of various types - text, spreadsheet, presentation - within it. And, contrary to what you say, you can transfer or link results from one type of document to another.

If there is any difference in this matter between commercial and open source software, it is surely the reverse of what you suggest?
